Courses & ideas

Oxford PPE and Cambridge HSPS

A student drawn to politics and society may find both courses exciting. Their common interests should not obscure their different academic foundations.

The disciplines do different work

Oxford PPE begins with philosophy, politics and economics. After the first year, students can choose to continue with all three branches or focus on two, with options within them. A question about inequality, for example, might lead to economic models, political institutions and arguments about justice.

Cambridge Human, Social, and Political Sciences brings together politics and international relations, sociology and social anthropology. It invites students to examine institutions and ideas alongside the ways people live, organise and interpret their worlds.

Try the comparison on a question

Take a question you care about: why do people trust some institutions and reject others? Imagine how an economist, a political theorist, a sociologist and an anthropologist might each investigate it. Which approaches make you want to read further? The answer is a more useful guide than treating the courses as interchangeable versions of “politics”.

Neither degree can be reduced to a single method, and options change. Read the current course structures before deciding. Then look honestly at your preparation, including any subject requirements for the course and entry year.
