YOUR ROUTE INTO PSYCHOLOGY

What applies
to you?

Choose your qualification, then check the subjects within it. Oxford highly recommends a science or Maths. Cambridge requires a subject from a specified list. The distinction matters.

Cambridge remains Psychological and Behavioural Sciences (PBS). Change the Oxford route to compare its structure and accreditation conditions.

Oxford: A*AA or IB 39 / 766 HL for EP and the Psychology joint degrees. No centrally required school subject; a science or Maths is highly recommended, and Psychology counts in that advice.

Cambridge: A*A*A or IB 41–42 / 776 HL. At least one of Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics at the required level. Psychology alone does not meet that subject condition. Biology HL can meet it without Maths HL. Churchill publishes IB 43 / 777; Corpus Christi has a narrower subject list.

Oxford AP: four 5s, or three 5s plus SAT 1470 / ACT 32. Cambridge: five relevant AP 5s, strong school results and SAT 1500 / Maths 750 or ACT 33, with Science 33 for science applicants using ACT. Confirm the relevant AP science/Maths package with the College.

National routes: a country equivalence never overrides the subject conditions. Cambridge PBS is not a CBSE-only accepted course. Canadian, Chinese and mixed packages need particular care; a school diploma or headline national score alone may be insufficient.

BEGIN WITH THE EDUCATION

What would count
as evidence?

A claim about memory, emotion or behaviour is a starting point. Both courses ask how you would test it, interpret the data and question the explanation. Expect statistics, experimental methods and scientific reading, alongside discussion and essays.

One university choice.

You cannot ordinarily apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same undergraduate admissions year. Compare the course before building the application around it.

PBS, Natural Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or HSPS?

PBS is the direct Cambridge Psychology route. Natural Sciences may suit someone who wants a wider natural-science start before later Psychology. Its admissions requirements and ESAT are different.

Some Natural Sciences Psychology pathways can support BPS accreditation, but only with the right prior study, core papers and project. The currently checked 2025–26 rules distinguish an accredited Option A from routes that are not accredited. Do not assume that every NatSci Psychology option gives GBC or that an older handbook governs a 2027 entrant.

Oxford Biomedical Sciences offers a wider biomedical starting point. HSPS is better aligned with political, social and anthropological questions; it is not a substitute for an accredited Psychology degree. If the aim is psychiatry, start with Medicine.

THE SCORE QUESTION

No verified
Psychology cutoff.

We have not verified a universal Psychology-specific TARA threshold. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving receive separate 1.0–9.0 scores. The writing response is sent to the university rather than numerically scored by UAT-UK. A score is not an offer guarantee.

Do not convert an old TSA result into a TARA target. Prepare with the current official materials: no calculator, no dictionary and no penalty for an incorrect answer.

2027-entry TARA dates, fees, access arrangements and international centres

The required Oxford sitting was 12–16 October 2026; TARA in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau was scheduled for 14 October. Ordinary Oxford Psychology applicants cannot use a January sitting instead.

Booking closed 28 September, 18:00 UK time. Access-arrangement requests closed 14 September and bursary applications 21 September. Arrange approved adjustments before booking. The published results date is 16 November 2026.

The test fee was £78 in the UK / Republic of Ireland or £133 elsewhere. Check test-centre availability, legal-name matching and accepted identification early. Booking the test and submitting UCAS are separate tasks.

Cambridge College assessments and submitted work are separate checks

The central 2027 PBS assessment list names Selwyn and St Edmund’s. The College arranges the assessment after shortlisting; no advance assessment registration is needed. Exact invitations control delivery and timing.

Submitted work is a different requirement: the central PBS page lists one piece for Robinson and two for Magdalene, Murray Edwards, Pembroke and St Edmund’s. Christ’s, Queens’ and King’s publish no assessment or submitted work; Caius states no PBS written test this year.

Use current instructions for teacher marking, authenticity and deadlines. A previous PBSAA format or an older list of assessment Colleges is not a reliable guide for this cycle.

ADMISSIONS IN CONTEXT

The numbers.
And their limits.

International families need figures that describe their group. A whole-course offer rate is not an international applicant’s chance of admission. Select a view to see what the checked data can support.

Published statistics ↗

We have not verified a current, matched international-only or Home-only applications → offers → acceptances funnel for these exact routes. No Psychology-specific overseas cap was identified in the checked guidance; that is not evidence of unlimited places. School location, domicile and fee status are different measures.

Oxford’s newer departmental figures: why they are shown separately

The newer Psychology admissions page labels its combined EP/PPL figures 2025–2026: 682 applications, 251 shortlisted and 102 offers. That is about 36.8% shortlisted and 15.0% offered, across the combined courses.

The central course cards above instead use 2023–25 three-year averages. An older departmental address gives 752 / 250 / 112 for a different labelled period. These are different populations and time periods; they cannot be combined into one funnel or split into an international rate.

Cambridge totals shown are University tuition + living only: add the annual College fee. Christ’s publishes £13,000 for 2027; selecting Christ’s gives a complete illustrative total. No current fee is assumed for another College. Change College ↑ · Christ’s fee source ↗

These are planning illustrations, not fee quotations. They exclude inflation, exchange-rate changes, flights, visa/IHS charges and personal extras. Oxford fees usually rise annually; Cambridge’s international University tuition is normally fixed for the course, while College policies vary. Cambridge PBS remains three years when the Oxford length changes. Accommodation contracts may be shorter than your chosen budget period.

A complete Cambridge example, and how to read the comparison

At Christ’s, the checked 2027 overseas example is £46,872 tuition + £13,000 College fee + £11,970 living = £71,842 for nine months. At twelve months it is £75,832. Select Christ’s above to include its College fee in both annual and course totals.

For the same nine-month living assumption, Oxford is £71,555–£77,855 a year. Its four-year MSci illustration is £286,220–£311,420 at constant prices. Cambridge’s three-year Christ’s illustration is £215,526. An annual comparison alone hides the cost of an extra year.

Home fee status is not decided by passport or school country alone. Nationality, immigration status and residence history can all matter; the university makes the assessment. Home status does not automatically establish entitlement to student finance or NHS postgraduate training.

Fee-status guidance ↗
Scholarships: build the budget before relying on an award

International undergraduate funding is limited and often partial. Cambridge Trust awards generally require an offer and College nomination. Its Global Impact Scholarship is a current full-cost award for students with substantial financial need and barriers, with specific eligibility and selection.

Reach Oxford has restricted country and need criteria, with only around 2–3 awards a year. Its published 2027 scholarship deadline is 26 January 2027; check the January application information. Applying for the degree and applying for funding are separate steps.

US federal loans and the fourth year

US borrowing rules changed in 2026. Do not budget on an older unlimited Parent PLUS or Grad PLUS assumption. Ask the university loans team to confirm current limits, any grandfathering, the exact degree’s eligibility and the classification of Oxford’s integrated fourth year.

Cambridge says its 2027–28 loan information will be published by the end of May 2027. Leave room for exchange-rate movement and costs due before disbursement.

BPS ACCREDITATION & YOUR NEXT STEP

A foundation.
Then a profession.

A Psychology degree can lead towards research, data, policy, education and many other fields. For professional practice, BPS accreditation is an academic foundation, not a licence to practise.

  1. 01 / THE DEGREE

    Protect the foundation.

Meet the accredited course’s content, class and project conditions to gain the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). Joint-degree choices matter.

  2. 02 / FURTHER TRAINING

    Choose a specialism.

Relevant experience and competitive postgraduate professional training follow. Clinical training commonly involves a three-year doctorate after the degree.

  3. 03 / PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

    Meet the regulator’s rules.

Protected practitioner titles, including clinical psychologist, require the relevant professional training and HCPC registration in the UK.

What exactly is required for BPS GBC?

Oxford EP: at least a 2:2 and a pass in the experimental project, including on the BA exit route. Leaving after three years does not remove the project condition.

Oxford Psychology joint degrees: at least 50% Psychology, coverage of the BPS core curriculum, a second-class degree and a passed experimental project in year three or four. Plan the balance with the department; the PPL label alone is not enough.

Cambridge PBS: an accredited degree with a second-class award provides the GBC foundation. Read the current cohort’s regulations for the full conditions; a historical handbook should not be treated as a new entrant’s rulebook.

Clinical Psychology: experience, funding and international routes

GBC is a foundation, not a promise of a doctoral place. Clinical training providers commonly expect a First or 2:1, strong research skills and relevant experience. The degree’s minimum accreditation standard is different from a competitive doctoral application.

NHS-funded places have programme-specific residence and funding conditions, as well as employment/right-to-work rules. Three years studying in the UK does not automatically establish eligibility. Some institutions, such as UCL, offer a separate self-funded international DClinPsy route; it remains competitive and needs its own eligibility and cost check.

For context, Clearing House reports 6,236 applicants and 1,133 NHS clinical-training places in 2026, about 18%. These are national postgraduate figures, not Oxford/Cambridge undergraduate or international admission rates.

Working overseas, the US route, and Psychology versus Psychiatry

A UK BA or MSci does not confer a global professional licence. Before choosing a degree, check the regulator and postgraduate programmes in the country where you may practise. US licensure is set by the state board and typically involves doctoral education, supervised experience and examinations. Ask graduate schools separately about recognition of a three-year UK degree.

APA does not accredit bachelor’s programmes; its current accreditation work includes master’s and doctoral programmes. Do not describe an Oxford or Cambridge bachelor’s as an “APA-accredited” route. BPS GBC, HCPC registration and overseas licensure are different things.

Psychiatry starts with a medical degree and later specialist training. A Psychology degree does not qualify its holder to work as a psychiatrist or prescribe as one.

THE APPLICATION & THE MOVE

The details
that matter.

Plan the documents, English conditions and practical move alongside the academic application.

2027-entry reference · the main deadline has passed.

UCAS was due 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time. Cambridge’s additional form and required transcript were due 22 October, 18:00. For a later entry year, check its own published dates. The January mature round is a restricted exception.

  1. BEFORE APPLYING

    Confirm the package.

Check the qualification, science/Maths subjects, course and College. Oxford TARA booking is separate from UCAS; arrange access requirements early.

  2. THE APPLICATION

    Show your thinking.

UCAS needs your qualifications, academic reference and predictions. Cambridge adds My Cambridge Application and a transcript where required.

  3. DECEMBER 2026

    Reason in conversation.

Oxford EP/PPL interviews are scheduled 14–16 December, online. Cambridge dates, format, written work and assessments depend on the College invitation.

  4. JANUARY 2027

    Read every condition.

Main Oxford decisions: 12 January. Cambridge: 27 January. Check grades, English, funding and any other conditions carefully.

Personal statement, reference, transcripts and application charges

UCAS uses three questions with 4,000 characters total, including spaces, and at least 350 characters per response. Explain what you explored, how you evaluated it and where your thinking developed. A paid placement, publication or counselling certificate is not a stated requirement.

Declare actual and pending qualifications. Your referee should explain predictions, school subject availability and relevant circumstances. Follow Cambridge’s transcript and certified English-document rules; do not translate it yourself. Oxford normally asks school applicants not to send unsolicited certificates with UCAS and requests evidence when needed.

2027 UCAS fee: £34.50. Most Cambridge applicants studying outside the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man pay a further £60, with exemptions. Oxford’s outside-UK/Ireland TARA plus UCAS was £167.50, before English tests, school exams, documents or travel.

English-language requirements and interviews from overseas

The normal IELTS Academic reference at both universities is 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in every component, subject to current rules, College conditions and any approved waiver. Ask before assuming that an English-medium school removes the condition.

Oxford does not accept TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026 under its current undergraduate guidance. Its English condition normally needs to be met by 31 July in the offer year; it does not accept superscoring. Check the current accepted-test list before paying.

Cambridge distinguishes interview-readiness guidance from the English condition for admission. A lower interview-stage reference is not the course’s admission standard. Check current College and test-provider instructions, including revised TOEFL rules.

Oxford interviews are online for this cycle; older departmental “in Oxford” wording should not trigger travel plans. Prepare a quiet space, working audio/video and any required device. Cambridge’s College invitation controls its format and any assessment adjustments.

Visa, health surcharge, financial evidence and work

Current reference charges are a £558 Student visa application fee and £776 Immigration Health Surcharge per visa year. The visa can extend beyond the teaching period; Cambridge illustrates IHS totals of £2,716 for a three-year undergraduate course and £3,492 for four years. Recheck at application.

The outside-London maintenance evidence reference is £1,171 a month for up to nine months: £10,539, plus the tuition required by the CAS rules. Funds normally need to be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application. Differential-evidence rules do not remove the underlying requirement. This visa minimum is lower than a realistic annual study budget.

A Student visa may allow up to 20 hours’ work per week in term, but university rules can be stricter. Ordinary self-employment, including freelance private tutoring, is prohibited. Do not depend on term-time work to pay the core budget.

Under current rules, eligible non-doctoral Graduate visa applications from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. Policy for a 2027 entrant’s eventual graduation cannot be guaranteed. Graduate work permission is separate from eligibility for funded professional training.

Accommodation, disability support, National Service and deferral

Cambridge guarantees College accommodation to individual undergraduates without children for three or four years, with contract lengths that commonly vary from 27 to 39 weeks. Oxford guarantees first-year accommodation and at least one further year; some Colleges offer more. Check vacation storage, accessible rooms, family provision and charges directly.

Contact disability services and the College early about adjustments and support. Test-provider access arrangements and university study/interview arrangements are separate processes. Oxford describes support for international students who are not eligible for UK Disabled Students’ Allowance.

For Singapore National Service, agree the intended start year before applying. Christ’s describes deferred and double-deferred applications; another College’s policy must be checked directly.

Mature applicants, previous university study and January entry-round rules

Cambridge mature applicants are 21 or over by 1 October in the entry year. Eligible applicants to Hughes Hall, St Edmund’s or Wolfson may have a January PBS application round: UCAS 13 January 2027, with the additional form / transcript deadline 20 January. Check that the College offers the route and accepts that application round.

This is not a second application after an unsuccessful October application in the same cycle. Cambridge PBS has no affiliated Part IB route that guarantees starting in year two. A previous degree does not turn PBS into an accelerated professional qualification.

Oxford does not ordinarily accept transfers from another university. If you have begun university elsewhere, establish your position with admissions rather than assuming credits will transfer.

QUESTIONS FAMILIES ASK

Before you
decide.

Can I apply without school Psychology?

Yes, it is not a required school subject at either university. Oxford highly recommends a science or Maths; Cambridge requires one from its specified list. School Psychology can support your interest, but on its own it does not fulfil Cambridge’s science/Maths condition.

Do I need Maths HL, or can Biology HL be enough for PBS?

Biology HL can meet Cambridge’s specified-subject requirement. PBS does not have a universal Maths AA HL requirement. The exact College, grades and subject combination still matter. If using Maths AI HL, Christ’s and Queens’ explicitly consider it and recommend AA; seek advice from other Colleges.

Which course is easier to get into?

The checked figures use different periods, populations and definitions. None provides a reliable individual prediction or a matched international comparison. Choose the course and subject preparation that fit your interests, then assess the whole application.

Will the degree qualify me as a therapist or clinical psychologist?

No undergraduate route here provides a professional practice licence by itself. GBC can support further professional training. Clinical Psychology, counselling and other regulated or professionally accredited routes have their own training, experience, funding and registration requirements. Read the career section before making a long-term plan.
