Important qualification details, including Oxford Chemistry’s IB alternative

Oxford Physics and Physics & Philosophy: A*AA, including Maths and Physics, with A* in Maths, Physics or Further Maths; IB 39 / 766 HL, including Maths and Physics, with 7 in one. Further Maths is helpful, rather than a universal formal Oxford condition.

Oxford Chemistry: A*A*A with Chemistry and Maths. Two A*s must be in its approved science/Maths list, not necessarily both Chemistry and Maths. IB 40 with Chemistry HL 7 and Maths HL 6 / 766 HL; alternatively SL AA Maths 7, HL 776, Chemistry 7 and a second HL science 7. SL AI is not this exception.

Oxford Materials: A*AA, Maths and Physics; A* in Maths, Physics or Chemistry. IB 40 / 766 HL, with the same relevant subjects and 7 placement. GCSE Chemistry or equivalent is required; advanced Chemistry is highly desirable.

Oxford Earth Sciences: A*AA or AAAA, with Maths and Chemistry or Physics; IB 39 / 766 HL with the required subjects.

Cambridge: A*A*A or IB 41–42 / 776 HL centrally. Maths plus two approved sciences / Maths; Further Maths counts for A levels. IB Physical applicants normally need AA HL and two HL sciences. Computer Science or Psychology does not automatically supply a required science.

AP and national routes: Oxford uses four AP 5s, or three AP 5s plus the relevant SAT/ACT threshold. Cambridge normally needs five relevant AP 5s with strong diploma and SAT/ACT results. Natural Sciences is not in Cambridge’s CBSE-only accepted-course list. National equivalence never waives subject conditions.

BEGIN WITH THE EDUCATION

A science of your own.
Or room to explore.

Oxford lets you begin with the discipline. Cambridge asks you to study neighbouring sciences before narrowing. The right comparison starts with the work you want to do each week.

THE COURSES, SIDE BY SIDE

WHICH WOULD SUIT YOU?

Oxford might suit you if…

you already want a physics-centred education and sustained mathematical work from the first year.

Cambridge might suit you if…

you want to use the first-year breadth, then specialise with a strong foundation in neighbouring sciences.

Fit notes are our interpretation. Cambridge’s physical/biological admissions preference does not lock all later options, but prerequisites, performance and availability still matter. Its Part II Physical Sciences is a distinct broad third-year route, not another name for specialist Physics.

How a Cambridge pathway develops

Physics

Physics and Mathematics for Physical Sciences in year one, with two other experimental subjects. Preserve the later Physics / Mathematics chain. The first-year A mathematics option meets the prerequisites for all Part IB physical subjects.

Mathematics choices ↗

Chemistry

School Chemistry is needed for IA Chemistry. Later Chemistry A and B develop different parts of the subject. Part III includes research and advanced teaching, compared with Oxford’s fully research-based final year.

Chemistry pathway ↗

Materials

First-year Materials needs Chemistry or Physics, with no previous school Materials course required. Later study connects structure, processing and properties, with advanced research in Part III.

Later specialisms ↗

Earth Sciences

No school Geology is required for the first-year option. Fieldwork, laboratory evidence and quantitative study can lead towards Earth Sciences and related climate/environmental pathways.

No verified 2027 ESAT pass mark or guaranteed offer score is established here. A preparation target is different from an official threshold.

Oxford’s historical PAT threshold cannot be converted into a new ESAT cutoff. Cambridge considers the assessment alongside the wider academic application.

ESAT format & official preparation ↗
The ordinary 2027-entry sitting has passed.

Booking closed 28 September 2026; ESAT ran 12–16 October, with 12–13 October for China, Hong Kong and Macau. Results are due 16 November 2026. Test fee: £78 UK/Republic of Ireland; £133 elsewhere.

Official dates and deadlines ↗
Registration, access arrangements and the restricted January route

UCAS does not register you for ESAT. Book separately, select the correct modules, match your name to accepted identification and check the test centre. Arrange access support early; the October access deadline was 14 September.

Some Cambridge mature Colleges accept a restricted January Physical Natural Sciences application. Confirm eligibility and course availability first. The January ESAT window is 4–8 January 2027, with booking closing 21 December 2026. This is not an ordinary late application or an October-round retake.

Cambridge Mathematics with Physics uses the Mathematics admissions route, including its current TMUA/STEP arrangements, rather than the Natural Sciences ESAT rule.

ADMISSIONS IN CONTEXT

The numbers,

A useful international breakdown exists for Oxford Chemistry. Its latest report gives 453 EU/Overseas applications and 44 offers: a calculated 9.7% offer rate. Select Chemistry above to compare the Home and whole-cohort figures.

These courses do not inherit Medicine’s place caps. Oxford says its international quota applies to Medicine. No fixed international Cambridge Physical NatSci cap was verified here; capacity remains finite.

What the statistics can and cannot tell you

Oxford Chemistry’s 2025–26 report records 1,015 applications, 690 shortlisted and 218 offers; 174 offers from 562 Home applications and 44 from 453 EU/Overseas applications. The report’s labels are retained. These are offers, not eventual enrolments.

Oxford’s 2025 Physics exercise combined Physics and Physics & Philosophy: 1,637 applications, 468 shortlisted and 206 offers, including five deferred to 2027. That is a different population and an older test context from the current course-page averages.

Cambridge’s 2025 Natural Sciences data cover biological and physical applicants, all domiciles. Offer rate is 25.4%; acceptances divided by applications is 21.8%. Neither isolates international Physical Natural Sciences.

Different years, definitions and applicant groups cannot be used as a fair “easier university” ranking or a personal probability.

Cambridge figures are tuition + living only: add the annual College fee. Select Christ’s to include its published £13,000 example; check the fee for any other College.

Three-year plans use the BA route; four-year plans assume the relevant integrated master’s and successful progression.

Constant-price illustrations, not future quotations. Excludes inflation, exchange-rate changes, visa/IHS, flights and course extras. Oxford fees can rise; Cambridge states its overseas University rate is fixed for the course. College-fee policies vary. Oxford living reference: £1,475–£2,175/month; Cambridge: £1,330/month.

Extended terms, fieldwork and other costs

Oxford Materials’ fourth year spans approximately 38 weeks. Do not budget only for three eight-week terms. Ask about accommodation for extended project periods and vacations.

Oxford Earth Sciences covers taught field-class travel and accommodation, but its independent mapping project has a £500 grant and can cost more. Cambridge fieldwork is subsidised; its published first-year contribution figures differ between pages, so confirm the current schedule.

Include a suitable computer, laboratory clothing/equipment, optional trips, project travel, insurance and flights. External research opportunities are not automatically funded.

Scholarships, loans and a realistic funding plan

International undergraduate funding is limited. Reach Oxford can cover fees, maintenance and annual travel for eligible applicants from specified countries; around two to three awards are available. Its page gives a 26 January 2027 scholarship deadline; check the January instructions after an offer.

Most Cambridge support is partial. The Cambridge Trust Global Impact Scholarship is a specific competitive full-cost scheme for overseas-fee undergraduates with high financial need who have overcome significant challenges. Eligible offer holders are referred through their College.

Check country-specific schemes before applying. Confirm whether sponsorship covers the fourth year, College fees, fieldwork and increases. US federal-loan rules have changed for new borrowers; obtain current loan advice. Do not assume term-time work can close a large funding gap.

PREPARATION

A familiar principle.
An unfamiliar problem.

Preparation should make you better at thinking with the science. An expensive internship or a publication is not a universal admissions requirement.

01 / REASON

Explain the model.

Show your assumptions, connect equations to physical meaning, and test dimensions or limiting cases. A correct answer is stronger when you can explain why it holds.

02 / INVESTIGATE

Follow the evidence.

Work carefully with an experiment, a mechanism, a material property or field data. Ask what else could explain the result and how you would distinguish the possibilities.

03 / DISCUSS

Think aloud.

Practise responding to a new idea, using a hint and revising an answer. Interview preparation should develop reasoning rather than a rehearsed performance.

THE APPLICATION & THE MOVE

Know the steps.
Leave room to prepare.

The school record, admissions assessment and interview need a coordinated plan. International documents, funding and the visa follow their own deadlines.

15 OCTOBER 2026 · PASSED

UCAS application

18:00 UK time for the ordinary 2027 round. Cambridge’s supplementary form and required transcript deadline was 22 October.

DECEMBER 2026

Academic interviews

Oxford is online. Cambridge varies by College and school location; check whether travel is required. Your invitation controls the arrangements.

JANUARY 2027

The decision

Oxford: 12 January. Cambridge main round: 27 January. After an offer, coordinate academic conditions, finances, accommodation and immigration.

This is a 2027 entry reference. The main deadlines have passed. Verify the next cycle rather than shifting dates forward by a year.

Documents, personal statements and application charges

UCAS uses three personal-statement questions, 4,000 characters total including spaces, with at least 350 per answer. The 2027 UCAS fee is £34.50. Arrange your reference and predicted results early.

Cambridge also requires My Cambridge Application, including an official transcript where required. Its optional 1,200-character statement can explain Natural Sciences when your other courses are narrower. Most international applicants pay an additional £60, with published exceptions and waivers.

Cambridge will not review additional documents uploaded only to UCAS for this cycle: use its supplementary form or the College’s instructions. Oxford does not ordinarily ask school applicants to send unsolicited certificates or transcripts.

English language and interview arrangements

Oxford currently lists IELTS 7.5 overall, at least 7.0 in every component, with accepted alternatives and waiver rules. TOEFL taken from 21 January 2026 is not currently accepted while the changed test is reviewed.

Cambridge normally expects IELTS 7.5 overall, usually 7.0 in each element; the College sets the actual condition. English-medium schooling does not automatically establish a waiver.

Oxford Physics / Physics & Philosophy interviews are scheduled for 9–15 December; Chemistry first-College interviews 7–10 December; Materials on relevant dates 10, 14–16 December; Earth Sciences 14–16 December. Invitations and additional interviews can change the individual schedule.

Cambridge publishes College-specific online/in-person formats. Christ’s and Queens’ are online; Churchill is in person in the current table. Test any required writing setup and record both UK and local time.

Student visa, financial evidence and ATAS

The current Student visa fee is £558. Student-rate IHS is £776 per visa year; Cambridge illustrates £2,716 for three years and £3,492 for four, because the visa lasts longer than the teaching course.

Current outside-London maintenance evidence is £1,171/month, up to nine months (£10,539), plus relevant outstanding first-year fees. Where required, bank funds normally need 28 consecutive days, with evidence within 31 days before applying. The visa minimum is not the full course budget.

ATAS can matter for Physics and Materials. Oxford lists its four-year Materials, Physics, Physics & Philosophy, and Mathematical & Theoretical Physics courses. Do not infer that every integrated science master’s, including MChem, automatically requires it.

Nationality and immigration circumstances determine exemptions; school location does not. Where needed, ATAS is free, takes at least 30 working days and can take longer, with no fast track. For Cambridge, obtain exact subject and course-change advice, especially when extending to an MSci.

Accommodation, disability support and work

Check accommodation availability in every year, vacation access, storage and extended project dates. Ask early about laboratory and fieldwork access, reasonable adjustments and any personal support costs. ESAT and interview adjustments have separate processes.

A Student visa may allow up to 20 hours’ work per week in term, but Cambridge does not expect students to undertake paid term-time work. The immigration ceiling is not academic permission for a demanding work schedule; self-employment is restricted.

Current Graduate visa rules give 18 months for applications from January 2027. A 2027 entrant graduates years later, so recheck then: admission does not guarantee a job, sponsorship or a future immigration route.

Accreditation, research careers and returning home

The Oxford and Cambridge Physics departments describe IOP accreditation for their relevant Physics awards; Chemistry professional recognition depends on the exact RSC-accredited route. Do not apply one specialist claim to every possible Natural Sciences combination.

Oxford Materials’ captured accreditation wording covers older cohorts; confirm current 2027-cohort IOM3 recognition. Its BA exit is not accredited. Earth Sciences and Materials professional pathways likewise depend on the exact award. A degree does not automatically confer chartered status.

An integrated master’s can support research preparation, but does not guarantee a funded PhD. Check international funding eligibility and any overseas fee gap. For US graduate study or recognition at home, ask the specific institution about a three-year UK degree rather than assume a universal rule.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

Before you
make the choice.

Can I apply to Cambridge Physics or Chemistry directly?

The usual school-entry route is Natural Sciences, BCF0, indicating a physical interest. You build the specialist pathway within the Tripos. Mathematics with Physics is a different first-year option through Mathematics; Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology has separate direct entry.

Do I need Further Mathematics?

Oxford Physics lists it as helpful, rather than universally compulsory. Cambridge College expectations need careful checking: Trinity strongly recommends it for physical routes. The historical 92% Further Maths and 97% three-A* entrant figures concern 2018, 2019 and 2023 cohorts; they are not new formal minimums. Explain school availability and prepare for the mathematical transition.

Read the dated entrant context ↗
Is Physics & Philosophy Physics with a few extra discussions?

No. It is a substantial joint degree with reading, logic and argumentative writing. Select it above to compare its structure, qualification requirements and different overseas fee. Cambridge Natural Sciences is not an equivalent named joint course.

Can I change subject or stay for a fourth year?

Cambridge offers flexibility, bounded by prerequisites, performance and course availability. Part III entry is subject-specific. Oxford’s routes have different BA/master’s arrangements; Chemistry is advertised as a four-year MChem. Changes can affect funding, ATAS and the visa. Ask before relying on a transfer or extension.

What if I am interested in climate, batteries or chemical engineering?

Start with the questions: Earth systems and observations may point towards Earth Sciences; molecular processes towards Chemistry; structure and performance towards Materials; whole-system design towards Engineering. Cambridge Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology is a separate direct-entry course. A course title alone cannot show the best fit.

How current is this guidance?

Checked 29 October 2026 for a 2027 entry reference. Academic review is pending. Current teaching menus and progression rules are not promises about every later year. Materials accreditation, conflicting Cambridge field-cost figures and test-score percentile wording require further checks before making more specific claims.

Each numerical section links its official sources. The Universities, College, test provider and individual offer govern the application. This page does not predict admission.
