Cambridge’s official guidanceBEGIN WITH THE SCIENCE
Oxford offers Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Biology as distinct degrees. Cambridge brings biological and physical sciences together through Natural Sciences, with later specialisation.
THE COURSES, SIDE BY SIDE
Start with Biomedical Sciences and biological Natural Sciences. Add Oxford’s other routes to see what changes.
Human biology, disease mechanisms and the nervous system, with increasing choice as your interests develop.
BA / MBiomedSci · 3 or 4 years
Tuition may increase annually. Living costs are additional; the fourth-year research term requires a longer period in residence.
The molecular and chemical explanations of living systems, leading to an extended research year.
MBiochem · 4 years
Tuition may increase annually. Living costs are additional; the final-year project includes an extended first term.
Life across cells, organisms and ecosystems, with evolution, fieldwork and increasing specialisation.
BA / MBiol · 3 or 4 years
Tuition may increase annually. Living costs and any additional course-related costs are separate.
A broad scientific framework, with a biological application stream and increasing specialisation.
BA · 3 years / MSci · 4 years in some subjects
International students normally pay an annual College fee in addition to University tuition. Living costs are separate. Check the fee conditions for your entry year.
WHICH WOULD SUIT YOU?
you are most interested in human biology and want an integrated biomedical foundation before choosing a direction in cell and systems biology or neuroscience.
you want to explore several sciences before specialising, and enjoy the Mathematics that connects them.
Oxford: apply to a named degree. Cambridge: apply to Natural Sciences, rather than a separate school-leaver Biochemistry or Neuroscience degree.
Flexibility has prerequisites. Check which school subjects and first-year choices support the direction you may want to take.
Checked 22 October 2026 for 2027 entry. Course options and progression conditions can change. Biomedical Sciences provides scientific education, not medical training.
THE ADMISSIONS TESTS
Oxford Biomedical Sciences and Cambridge Natural Sciences require the ESAT. Oxford Biology and Biochemistry currently have no admissions test.
Mathematics 1 is compulsory. For both core ESAT routes, choose two more modules from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2. Check other UCAS choices before booking.
Oxford Biomedical Sciences has no ESAT cutoff. The department considers performance competitively alongside the rest of the application.
There is no ESAT pass or fail score. A practice target is not a university offer threshold, and no score guarantees a place at Cambridge.
2027 entry reference: the ordinary Oxbridge ESAT sitting was 12–16 October 2026 and has passed. Verify the next cycle’s dates before booking.

ADMISSIONS IN CONTEXT
Read every figure with its course, year and applicant group. Combined totals cannot tell you an international student’s individual chances.
of applicants in the 2025 admissions exercise resided outside the UK. This describes residence, not fee status or an offer rate.
No international quota is stated for Biomedical Sciences.

Official statistics ↗2025 admissions cycle
672 offers and 576 acceptances. The calculated offer rate is 25.4%; acceptances divided by applications is 21.8%. These are different stages.

The ordinary UCAS deadline for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026 and has passed. Use this as a reference; the next cycle needs its own checks.
PREPARATION
Good preparation gives you something to investigate, explain and question.
Apply familiar principles to unfamiliar graphs, experiments and scientific problems. Explain your reasoning.
ESAT where required. For Biology and Biochemistry at Oxford, focus on the academic selection process and scientific discussion.
Read beyond a summary, examine the evidence and consider a competing explanation. What would you investigate next?
