BEGIN WITH THE EDUCATION

Start broadly.
Find your discipline.

Both courses keep the first two years broad. You do not have to arrive committed to one engineering branch. Compare the later options, the project work and the kind of problems you want to spend time solving.

One university choice.

You cannot ordinarily apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same admissions year.

THE COURSES, SIDE BY SIDE

A shared breadth.
A different shape.

Lectures, practical work and small-group teaching underpin both degrees. Specialisation and industrial experience are useful points of comparison.

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Oxford
Engineering Science.

A common scientific foundation, followed by specialisation and a substantial individual research project.

MEng · Four years

Years 1–2
Build the common foundation. Mathematics, mechanics, electricity, information and energy, supported by laboratories and College tutorials.
Year 3
Begin to specialise. Choose across eight branches, alongside practical work and a group design project.
Year 4
Investigate a question in depth. Advanced options and a major individual research project complete the MEng.
INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

Strongly encouraged. Oxford supports opportunities to gain experience; it does not publish the same six-week course requirement as Cambridge.

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge
Engineering.

Two broad years lead into an engineering area, with design, practical work and industrial experience built into the course.

BA · Three years / BA + MEng · Four years

Years 1–2
Explore across engineering. A common programme of mathematical and physical principles, laboratories, computing and design. Year 2 includes an integrated design project.
Year 3
Develop your engineering area. Specialist papers and projects lead to the BA. Choices influence later study and professional accreditation.
Year 4
Take the MEng further. Advanced modules and a major individual project. Progression currently requires at least a 2.ii in either Year 2 or Year 3.
INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

At least six weeks by the end of Year 3. Cambridge’s course has a defined industrial-experience requirement, with departmental support to find opportunities.

These are later areas within the broad courses, not a list of separate first-year courses. Oxford offers H100 and named Engineering Science codes; the common first two years remain. Cambridge Engineering uses H100. Check the exact application code and available options.

Can I study abroad during the degree?

Oxford

A competitive fourth-year Princeton exchange is available for up to five students, selected on merit during Year 3.

Oxford exchange ↗

Cambridge

Selected students may spend Year 3 at an exchange partner, including École Centrale Paris or the National University of Singapore under current arrangements.

Cambridge opportunities ↗

Exchange places are not guaranteed. Academic selection, partner availability, costs and immigration arrangements need separate checks.

Do I need to choose biomedical, chemical or mechanical engineering now?

For the two main courses, specialisation comes later. Oxford’s named codes still lead through its broad first two years. Cambridge Bioengineering and Mechanical Engineering are later areas within Engineering.

Cambridge Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is a separate direct-entry course. Oxford Materials Science and Cambridge Design are also separate degrees. Their subject and assessment rules differ: see the related courses below.

THE ADMISSIONS TEST

The ESAT.
Three set modules.

Both main Engineering courses require Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics. Oxford uses the ESAT for 2027 entry; older PAT advice belongs to an earlier cycle.

Mathematics 1

27 questions · 40 minutes · separately timed

Mathematics 2

27 questions · 40 minutes · separately timed

Physics

27 questions · 40 minutes · separately timed

81 questions. 120 minutes in total. No calculator or dictionary; no penalty for an incorrect answer. Unused time does not carry into the next module.

No universal cutoff.

Each module receives its own score from 1.0 to 9.0. There is no universal ESAT pass mark or guaranteed-offer score. Christ’s explicitly says it has no set score it looks for.

Oxford’s first 2027-entry ESAT cycle is still in progress. There is no completed Oxford ESAT offer-holder benchmark to present here as of 24 October 2026.

Universities assess the test alongside academic evidence and the rest of the application. A high score is useful evidence, rather than an admission decision.

Christ’s score guidance ↗

Ordinary 2027 route: book by 28 September 2026, 18:00 UK time; sit 12–16 October (12–13 October in China, Hong Kong and Macau). These dates have passed. October results are due 16 November 2026. Official dates ↗

SCORES IN CONTEXT

What does
a score mean?

The test provider’s explanation for October 2025 and January 2026 gives useful historical context, across that test cohort.

SCORE SCALE · EACH MODULE1.0–9.0
TYPICAL SCORE · HISTORICAL4.5
AROUND 10% SCORED ABOVE7.0

These are historical test-cohort benchmarks, not Engineering cutoffs or offer-holder averages. They do not establish an international threshold or a required 2027 score. Use the dated results explanation, rather than treating practice-test percentages as scaled scores. Read the provider’s results explanation ↗

The numbers
worth understanding.

Keep the course, reporting period and applicant group attached to each figure. These sources do not establish matching international-only Engineering offer rates.

INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT

Read the population first.

OXFORD · ENGINEERING SCIENCENo overseas

Oxford publishes an international quota exception for Medicine, not Engineering. That does not remove the need to meet the academic and selection requirements.

International-only rates are not shown because the published tables cover different populations. Read the full applicant field alongside your qualification, College and cost requirements.

Planning a new application?

This page uses 2027-entry reference requirements. The ordinary UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026; My Cambridge Application was due 22 October for most October applicants. Both have passed. Check the next cycle’s published rules before planning a fresh application.

COSTS & FUNDING

Overseas£46,872University tuition; College fee extra

International students normally pay an annual College fee as well. Christ’s lists £13,000 for 2027 entrants; other Colleges set their own fees. The overseas University fee is fixed for the cohort under current policy.

Official fee guidance ↗
What might an overseas student’s annual budget look like?

Oxford

Living costs for nine months: £13,275–£19,575. With overseas tuition, an illustrative annual total is £79,855–£86,155.

£66,580 tuition + £13,275–£19,575 living costs

Cambridge

Living costs for nine months: £11,970. Using Christ’s College fee as one named example, the illustrative annual total is £71,842.

£46,872 University + £13,000 College + £11,970 living costs

Calculated one-year illustrations using 2027–28 estimates, not whole-degree quotes. Excludes travel, visa charges, any immigration health surcharge, equipment and placement costs. Allow more for vacations: Cambridge’s twelve-month living estimate is £15,960. Home fees and later-year conditions can change. Cambridge Home fees ↗

Are scholarships available to international undergraduates?

Funding is limited at both universities. Build a sustainable budget without assuming a full scholarship. Check nationality, residence, financial circumstances and College or external award conditions.

Cambridge says few full scholarships are available; most support is partial and means-tested. Cambridge Trust consideration follows a College offer, but other awards can have earlier deadlines. Oxford describes its overseas undergraduate scholarships as very limited.

APPLYING FROM ABROAD

The practical
questions.

Test booking, interviews, English evidence and immigration: the details to settle alongside the academic choice.

Where do I sit the ESAT, and what does it cost?

Register and book separately from UCAS through the official UAT UK process for a Pearson VUE test centre. Choose the correct three modules for your course. The test is not taken from home.

The published fee is £78 at UK or Republic of Ireland centres; £133 elsewhere. The test centre’s location determines the fee. Check identification requirements carefully. Arrange approved access arrangements before booking; the bursary scheme is for eligible UK applicants.

For the 2027 October sitting, China, Hong Kong and Macau had a restricted 12–13 October window. The ordinary booking and testing deadlines shown above have passed.

Can I use January as a second ESAT attempt?

Not for the ordinary October-round Oxbridge application. You may take the ESAT only once per admissions cycle. January is not a general retake or a way to replace the required October sitting.

Specified mature-applicant or Foundation Year routes may have different arrangements. Confirm eligibility with the relevant University and College before relying on that exception.

Cambridge sitting requirements ↗
What if my school does not offer Further Mathematics?

Oxford: helpful, rather than compulsory. Mathematics and Physics remain required, with both A*s drawn from Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics.

Cambridge: contact your shortlisted Colleges. Take Further Mathematics to AS or A level if your school offers it. Where it is unavailable, ask whether your preparation is suitable; self-study is not an automatic replacement for a College’s formal condition.

This is qualification-specific. IB applicants need Mathematics AA HL for Cambridge, rather than an additional A-level award. AP and Singapore routes have their own requirements.

Which IB Maths course, or AP science subjects, should I take?

Oxford accepts Mathematics AA HL or AI HL. It requires 7 in both Mathematics and Physics, within 40 overall and 776 at HL. Cambridge requires Mathematics AA HL and Physics HL; check your College’s exact grades.

For APs, discuss Calculus BC and Physics C preparation early. Oxford expects BC where available, allows its published AB exception, and does not count AB and BC as separate subjects. Physics C Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism can count separately; other Physics combinations have restrictions.

Cambridge normally expects at least five relevant AP scores of 5, strong school results and the published SAT/ACT evidence. Check the full package, result timing and College conditions. Taking AP examinations does not require enrolment in an AP course; AP Capstone normally does not count towards Cambridge’s minimum.

Do I need work experience or an impressive engineering project?

Prior industrial experience is not an entry requirement. The six-week Cambridge requirement applies during the degree. What you have learned from an accessible activity matters more than its prestige or cost.

Investigate a physical system, write a small simulation, repair something or compare a model’s prediction with a measurement. Be ready to explain the assumptions, what went wrong and what you changed. Keep mathematical and physical reasoning at the centre.

Will I need to travel to the UK for interview?

Oxford’s undergraduate interviews are online. Engineering discussions ask you to reason through mathematical and physical problems, often with new information or prompts.

Cambridge’s format depends on the College. For 2027 entry, Churchill lists in-person interviews; Christ’s, Queens’, Downing and Trinity Hall list online. Check the current University table and your own invitation before booking travel.

Christ’s normally holds two academic Engineering interviews totalling 35–50 minutes, with no separate interview-day test or preparatory exercise. This is one College’s arrangement. Peterhouse may also ask for STEP II grade 2.

What do I submit beyond UCAS?

Book the ESAT separately. Cambridge also normally requires My Cambridge Application, with transcript or document instructions depending on your qualifications. For 2027, supporting documents follow My Cambridge Application or College instructions, rather than an extra UCAS-upload process.

Some applicants outside the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man pay a £60 Cambridge application fee; exemptions apply. Follow the official guidance for your circumstances. Main Engineering is not a general portfolio-entry course; Cambridge Design has different requirements.

The ordinary 2027 UCAS and supplementary-form deadlines have passed. Deferred entry under that cycle is different from a fresh application in the next cycle.

What English-language evidence do I need?

Where evidence is required, Oxford lists IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component. Cambridge normally asks for 7.5 overall, usually with 7.0 in each element. Accepted tests, exemptions and offer conditions need individual checks.

Oxford currently does not accept TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026 while the revised test is under review. English-medium schooling may support an exemption under the relevant University rules; it does not create an automatic waiver.

How are fee status, a Student visa and ATAS decided?

School location does not determine Home or overseas fee status. The relevant nationality, immigration and residence circumstances matter; the University assesses your position.

If you need a Student visa, you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) before applying. Cambridge issues a CAS only after all offer conditions have been met. Follow the University’s instructions on documents, finances and timing.

Do not assume every MEng requires ATAS. Oxford’s current undergraduate ATAS list covers Materials Science and specified Physics courses, rather than Engineering Science. Related courses, individual exemptions and Cambridge offer/CAS instructions need their own checks.

Checked 24 October 2026. University, College and UAT UK guidance remain the references for individual circumstances and future cycles.

AFTER THE DEGREE

An engineering degree.
A professional path.

Both universities offer routes into engineering practice and research. The exact accredited award, specialism and destination matter.

Does the MEng automatically make me a Chartered Engineer?

No. Chartered Engineer registration also requires professional competence and experience. An accredited MEng can satisfy the academic requirement; it does not complete professional registration by itself.

Oxford states accreditation through the 2027 intakes. At Cambridge, accreditation depends on your selected engineering area and papers. Check your planned pathway, especially if considering the three-year BA exit.

Will the degree be recognised in my home country?

Academic recognition and a licence to practise are separate questions. Washington Accord recognition concerns accredited engineering education; local professional requirements remain.

Singapore: check the PEB’s approved qualification, branch and further registration conditions. Its approved-qualification changes took effect on 5 October 2026. Hong Kong: check HKIE recognition for the exact award and discipline. United States: NCEES evaluation and state-board rules may apply.

PREPARATION

Work from
first principles.

A strong application grows from secure mathematics, physical intuition and the willingness to revise a model when the evidence changes.

Explain the model.

Draw a diagram, define the quantities and state your assumptions. Check dimensions and limiting cases before trusting the answer.

Practise the right test.

Use the official ESAT specification and timed materials. Historical ENGAA or NSAA questions can help where the provider marks them as relevant.

Learn from a design.

Build, measure or simulate something manageable. Keep a record of what failed and explain what the next version improves.
