BEGIN WITH THE EDUCATION

The same subject.
A different rhythm.

Both courses ask you to read legal sources carefully and defend your reasoning in small-group discussion. The sequence of the subjects and the pattern of examinations are worth looking at closely.

One university choice.

You cannot ordinarily apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same admissions year.

WHICH WOULD SUIT YOU?

Oxford might suit you if…

you are drawn to the common core, legal theory and the challenge of bringing a broad body of learning together for final examinations.

Cambridge might suit you if…

you prefer annual examination stages and want to develop specialist paper choices after a broad first year.

How do the opportunities to study abroad differ?

Oxford: choose the route when you apply.

Law with Law Studies in Europe is a four-year course. Year 3 is abroad. France, Germany, Italy and Spain require the relevant language at B2 by entry, with assessment for shortlisted applicants. Leiden teaches in English.

Each destination has its own UCAS code. Progression requires an average of at least 60 in Mods.

Oxford European route ↗

Cambridge: apply during the degree.

Apply for an exchange in your second year. Successful applicants spend year 3 abroad, then return for a fourth and final Cambridge year. Selection and relevant language conditions apply.

Current partners span Europe, Auckland and Singapore. Availability and funding need checking.

THE ADMISSIONS TEST

The LNAT.
Both parts matter.

Oxford and Cambridge both assess the multiple-choice section and the essay. Legal knowledge is not what the test is designed to examine.

42multiple-choice questions
12 passages
95 minfor the
multiple-choice section
40 minfor one essay
chosen from three

Oxford: no pass mark. Both sections inform selection. The Faculty publishes historical scores, which need to be read alongside the rest of the application.

Cambridge: both sections inform interview and final selection. The essay is marked centrally. Christ’s says it has no set score it looks for.

The score out of 42 covers multiple choice only. The essay is assessed separately. LNAT recommends about 500–600 words, within a recommended maximum of 750.

2027 ordinary route: book by 15 September 2026; sit by 15 October 2026. These dates have passed. Other LNAT universities’ later deadlines do not extend the ordinary Oxbridge window. Check dates ↗

SCORES IN CONTEXT

A useful benchmark.
Never a cutoff.

Oxford’s 2025–26 report gives these mean LNAT multiple-choice scores, out of 42. They describe groups at different stages.

ALL APPLICANTS24.94
SHORTLISTED29.37
OFFER HOLDERS30.48

These are historical means, not cutoffs. They do not establish a required score for 2027 or predict an offer. No comparable current Cambridge course-wide benchmark is verified here. Oxford’s admissions report ↗

What if I do not have comparable GCSE results?

Oxford’s 2025–26 report describes an initial ranking with 80% contextualised GCSEs, 10% LNAT multiple choice and 10% essay where that GCSE measure was available. Without it, the two LNAT components were weighted equally in that ranking.

This is a historical shortlisting method, not a final-offer formula or confirmed 2027 weighting. Being international does not by itself determine whether a contextualised GCSE measure is available.

English-language requirements and fee status

Where evidence is required, Oxford lists IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component. Cambridge normally asks for 7.5 overall, usually with 7.0 in each element. Check current accepted tests, exemptions and your offer’s conditions.

Oxford currently does not accept TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026 while the revised test is under review. English-medium schooling or another qualification may support an exemption; check each university’s rules rather than assuming a waiver.

Home or overseas fees depend on the relevant nationality, immigration and residence circumstances. Your school location or qualification does not decide your fee status.

Planning a new application?

These are 2027-entry reference requirements. The ordinary UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026 and has passed. My Cambridge Application was due on 22 October for most October applicants. Verify the next cycle before planning; eligible mature applicants should check their separate College round.

APPLYING FROM ABROAD

The practical
questions.

From booking the test to planning for an offer, these are the details to settle early.

Where do I take the LNAT, and how do I book?

Register and book separately from UCAS. Use the official finder for an authorised test centre near you. The LNAT is taken at a centre, rather than from home.

The published fee is £75 at UK or EU centres; £120 elsewhere. Your centre’s location determines the fee. If you need access arrangements, follow LNAT’s instructions before booking. Check the bursary scheme’s eligibility if you need help with the cost.

For the ordinary 2027 Oxbridge route, the booking and testing deadlines shown above have passed. Check the next cycle’s dates before making plans.

Will I need to travel to the UK for interview?

Oxford’s undergraduate interviews are online. Shortlisted Law applicants should follow their December invitation, including any preparation or language assessment for the European route.

Cambridge’s format depends on the College. For 2027 entry, Christ’s, Downing and St John’s list online interviews. Pembroke lets applicants outside the UK choose online or in person. Some other Colleges, including King’s, list in-person interviews. Check the current College table before budgeting for travel.

Do I need school Law or legal work experience?

Neither course requires a school Law qualification. Legal work experience is not a prerequisite. Cambridge explicitly recognises that access to placements varies and gives them no extra weight over other ways of exploring Law.

Reading a judgment, following a lecture or examining a legal argument can give you something thoughtful to discuss. What matters is the reasoning you develop from it.

What must I submit beyond my UCAS application?

The LNAT has its own registration. Cambridge also normally requires My Cambridge Application, and may ask for a transcript depending on your qualifications. Follow the document and deadline instructions for your own application.

Oxford Law does not request separately submitted written work. At Cambridge, College requirements differ: Pembroke asks for two pieces of written work. Use the College selector above for a few examples, then check your chosen College directly.

Can an international student get a scholarship?

Overseas undergraduate funding is limited at both universities. Build a budget you can sustain without assuming a full scholarship. Check eligibility by nationality, residence and financial circumstances, as well as College and external awards.

Cambridge says few full scholarships are available; most support is partial and means-tested. Cambridge Trust consideration follows a College offer, but some other awards have earlier deadlines. Oxford also describes its overseas undergraduate scholarships as very limited.

When should I plan for a student visa?

Check whether your nationality and existing immigration status mean you need a Student visa. If sponsorship is required, you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) before applying.

Cambridge issues a CAS only after all offer conditions have been met. Follow your university’s instructions on timing, documents and financial evidence. Budget separately for visa charges, any immigration health surcharge and travel.

PREPARATION

Read with care.
Give reasons.

A convincing application grows from sustained interest in the subject and the ability to think with precision.

Follow the reasoning.

Read a short judgment or an argument. Identify the claim, test its assumptions and explain a serious objection.

Practise both LNAT sections.

Use the official materials. Review why an answer is wrong, and practise building a clear essay within the time.

Reconsider an answer.

In discussion, listen to the new information and explain what it changes. Prior legal knowledge is not expected.

AFTER THE DEGREE

Studying Law.
Qualifying to practise.

The BA is an academic degree. Professional admission has further requirements, and the rules depend on the jurisdiction.

Becoming a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales

The solicitor route

The SRA’s SQE route requires a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years of qualifying work experience and suitability requirements. The degree can be in Law or another subject.

SRA qualification guidance ↗

The Bar route

The BSB requires academic and vocational components, followed by pupillage or work-based learning. The appropriate foundation subjects matter. Check paper choices against your intended route.

Bar Standards Board guidance ↗
Planning to practise in another country?

Recognition is jurisdiction-specific. New York requires an advance evaluation of foreign legal education. Singapore applies approved-degree and other qualifying-person conditions. Hong Kong may require an evaluation and conversion examinations before PCLL admission.

Check the exact degree, duration and paper choices before committing, especially for a shortened route. Studying abroad does not automatically confer local practice rights.

Already have a degree?

Oxford Senior Status and Cambridge affiliated Law can shorten the BA to two years. College availability, academic requirements, fees and professional recognition need separate checks. Both still require the LNAT.

These are undergraduate Law routes for graduates, with different purposes from a postgraduate BCL or LLM. Eligible mature applicants should check their College’s current application round.
