The University baseline is a starting point; an individual offer can differ.
The verified examples cover selected grade, test and interview differences. Other Colleges have their own conditions. A College selected here also sets the overseas College fee in the budget below; it does not determine your fee status.
A numerical result can be the beginning of the work. Both courses ask you to reason from definitions, question an assumption and construct a proof. Neither university belongs exclusively to “pure” or “applied” mathematics.
One university choice.
You cannot ordinarily apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same admissions year.

Statistics, Computer Science, Philosophy and mathematical Physics
OXFORD · SHARED G100 ADMISSION
Mathematics & Statistics
The same application as Mathematics. Four common terms come before the choice; it is not a separate admissions shortcut. Later study can concentrate more strongly on probability and statistics.
Substantial work in both subjects, a second-year group project and a fourth-year individual project. Overseas tuition is higher than main Mathematics. Cambridge Computer Science is a separate degree to investigate.
Mathematical proof, philosophical argument and logic. The advertised course is four years, with a three-year BA exit. Prior school Philosophy is not required.
About three-quarters of the first year is shared with the main option. Check the Physics/mechanics preparation and later progression. The normal Mathematics tests still apply.
Oxford MMathPhys is a later transfer. Eligible Oxford Mathematics, Physics or Physics and Philosophy students can apply for its advanced fourth year. External entrants use the separate MSc route.
TMUA is the current autumn test for both under central 2027 guidance. Cambridge normally adds STEP conditions after an offer. Oxford’s old MAT averages are not TMUA cutoffs.
OXFORD · CURRENT SELECTION
TMUA
The current test. No published pass mark.
Oxford replaced MAT for the 2026 application round, for 2027 entry. TMUA supports shortlisting alongside the academic record and context. Historical MAT means cannot be converted into a TMUA cutoff.
Central 2027 guidance requires TMUA before interview, with offers normally including grade 1 in both STEP 2 and STEP 3. There is no universal TMUA pass/fail threshold. Trinity publishes a specific exception for students studying overseas; confirm it directly.

No marks are deducted for incorrect TMUA answers. Familiar content can still require difficult reasoning. The October test window and booking deadline have passed; the provider lists results for 16 November 2026. TMUA format ↗Dates & results ↗
Trinity’s overseas TMUA exception: read before relying on it
Trinity says TMUA is optional for applicants studying overseas, and required for UK-based applicants. Its page says not taking it does not affect its own interview, offer or internal-funding decisions. A score can matter for another College through pooling or for external funding.
Central and Faculty guidance says all Mathematics applicants take TMUA. These published statements conflict. Obtain current confirmation from Trinity. The exception is not determined by nationality, overseas fee status or an AP curriculum, and must not be extended to other Colleges.
Normally grade 1 in STEP 2 and STEP 3. School grades and summer conditions sit alongside the earlier application; an offer is still conditional.
STEP 2
Mathematics + AS Further Mathematics.
With specified additions in the current syllabus. Three hours; eight pure, two mechanics and two probability/statistics questions.
STEP 3
Mathematics + full Further Mathematics.
With specified additions. The same paper length and question balance; students work towards complete written solutions.

Flexible STEP offers, near misses and both-paper requirements
Some participating Colleges may offer an A-level applicant either A*A*A plus 1,1, or A*A*A* plus grade 1 in one STEP paper, with both papers still taken. This is discretionary and is not a general IB concession.
The central 2027 list names Downing, Emmanuel, Girton, Jesus, Newnham, Robinson, Sidney Sussex and Trinity Hall. The general Faculty list differs: confirm the College’s actual offer. Jesus independently describes the alternative structure.
A College may review scripts after a near miss. It does not guarantee admission or explain every difference between the offer and acceptance totals.
International test centres, registration, dates and examination fees
UCAS does not book your test. TMUA uses authorised Pearson centres. The October 2026 booking deadline was 28 September; testing was 12–16 October, or 15–16 October in China, Hong Kong and Macau. Fees: £78 in the UK/Republic of Ireland; £133 elsewhere.
A centre must enter you for STEP; candidates cannot self-register. OCR’s 2027 candidate schedule: registration opens 1 March; modified papers by 21 April; entry/access deadline 4 May; STEP 2 on 14 June; STEP 3 on 21 June; results 12 August, 8am UK time. Centres can set earlier deadlines. Obtain your candidate entry number.
STEP 2027 costs £105.80 per paper in the UK, £146.90 outside, before centre charges. Two outside-UK papers cost £293.80. TMUA’s Republic-of-Ireland band does not carry over to STEP. Confirm identity documents, access arrangements and local start times early.
2025 application round. This combines Mathematics/Statistics, Mathematics and Philosophy, and Mathematics and Computer Science. The report does not give a matched offer numerator for this fee group.
A main-Mathematics international offer rate cannot be calculated from this figure.
Published statistics ↗CAMBRIDGE · INTERNATIONAL CONTEXTRead the scopeA matching course-only split is not verified here
The 2025 Mathematics total is all-domicile. The Home school-type table covers only Home applicants from UK schools; subtracting it does not isolate overseas applicants.
No Mathematics-specific international quota was identified. Medicine’s caps do not apply to this comparison.
No personal chance calculator. Cambridge’s higher offer rate does not establish easier entry: its offer conditions, applicant field and reporting scope differ. The new TMUA sequence also limits what can be inferred from earlier rounds.
The all-applicant comparison and why the international split is incomplete
Oxford main Mathematics/Statistics, 2025 round: 2,052 applications, 589 shortlisted and 208 offers (10.1% offers/applications, calculated). Philosophy: 169 / 56 / 17. Computer Science joint: 564 / 206 / 90. The cycle concerns 2026 entry or deferred 2027 entry.
Cambridge Mathematics, 2025 cycle: 2,032 applications, 555 offers and 258 acceptances, including Mathematics with Physics. The calculated offer rate is 27.3%; the reported acceptance-based success rate is 12.7%.
Oxford’s 1,034 non-EU international-fee-paying applications cover the whole Mathematics family without a matching offer numerator. Cambridge’s Home/UK-school subset is not every Home applicant. A matched international course funnel was not verified here, including through the public dashboard and historical FOI evidence. Do not subtract unmatched groups to manufacture one.
Cambridge adds an overseas College teaching fee. Oxford’s course fee includes college academic provision. Neither figure includes a room or your living costs.
Overseas fee status · 9 months of living costs · 2027/28

Living-cost assumptions: Oxford £1,475–£2,175 monthly; Cambridge £1,330. These are different institutions’ estimates, not identical spending baskets. Totals exclude travel, visas, health surcharge, examination fees and contingencies. Fees and living costs can change.
Three or four years, College terms, fee status and currency
Most routes offer a three-year BA or a fourth year of advanced study; Oxford Mathematics and Philosophy is advertised as four years with a BA exit. Budget for the route you actually intend to complete. Oxford Mathematics and Computer Science has overseas tuition of £66,580, rather than £50,420 for main Mathematics; selecting it changes the figures above.
Cambridge’s overseas University tuition is normally fixed for the course, but College terms differ. Magdalene resets its fourth-year College fee. Oxford normally increases fees annually; living costs can rise at either university. Simply multiplying the first-year figure is a constant-price illustration, not a quotation.
Home first-degree tuition is £10,050 for the published 2027/28 reference. A passport or school location does not decide fee status, student-finance entitlement or scholarship eligibility. Plan in pounds; exchange-rate changes remain the family’s exposure.
Scholarships, College bursaries and US financial aid
Full overseas undergraduate scholarships are scarce. Cambridge says most support is partial and means-tested. Cambridge Trust consideration normally follows an offer through the College; other awards, including Hong Kong’s Prince Philip Scholarship, can require action at application stage.
Trinity’s International Bursaries can cover fees and maintenance for selected students who could not otherwise attend; eligibility and selection apply. Oxford’s Reach scheme has restrictive nationality/need criteria and around two to three awards annually across the scheme. Its current 2027 deadline is 26 January; check the January application instructions after an offer.
US families: FAFSA is not a funding guarantee. Ask the university loans team about the exact BA/MMath route and the lending rules for new borrowers from 2026. Do not use an older unlimited Parent PLUS assumption to fill the gap, or infer a US loan classification from the degree title.
The ordinary 2027 application deadline has passed. This is a dated reference for current applicants. A fresh later-year application needs that cycle’s verified dates and rules.

Interview travel, written work and mathematical tasks
No submitted school essays for the Oxford Mathematics routes considered here. Cambridge Mathematics does not usually require them either. This is separate from mathematical written work around interview.
Oxford interviews are online. Cambridge formats depend on the College: Christ’s is online; Jesus interviews UK residents in person and overseas applicants virtually; Churchill expects in-person interviews. Trinity uses a written mathematical task before interview. Your invitation controls the format and equipment.
Expect to discuss unfamiliar problems, explain partial reasoning and respond to a hint. Joint-degree applicants should also prepare to discuss the second discipline. For online interviews, practise communicating written mathematics and ask early about accessibility or technology needs.
Transcripts, predicted grades, application fees and the US calendar
You can apply before completing the school-leaving exams, using predicted grades and an academic reference. Explain school provision and disruption. Declare the qualifications actually taken; international students do not need to acquire GCSEs solely because their school used another system.
Cambridge can require a transcript and additional information through My Cambridge Application. For 2027 it says it will not review extra documents uploaded to UCAS; use its specified route. The UCAS personal statement has three questions, 4,000 characters in total including spaces, and at least 350 characters per response.
UCAS 2027 fee: £34.50. Many overseas Cambridge applicants also pay £60, with exemptions. UCAS plus outside-UK/Republic-of-Ireland TMUA is £167.50; adding Cambridge’s £60 and two outside-UK STEP papers gives an illustrative £521.30 before centre charges.
US families should plan for conditional UK offers and summer AP/STEP results alongside US commitments. Four AP 5s do not make a Cambridge offer unconditional. Coordinate both calendars before accepting financial commitments.
English-language evidence and the changed TOEFL rules
Where required, IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component is Oxford’s published standard and Cambridge’s normal profile. Colleges set the actual condition. Mathematics does not itself create an English exemption.
Oxford currently does not accept TOEFL tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, pending review of the revised test. Cambridge’s current central list omits TOEFL; do not assume a new test is accepted without confirmation. Alternatives and possible waivers differ between universities.
Oxford does not require the English test at UCAS submission, but an imposed condition normally needs to be met by 31 July in the year the offer is received, including deferred entrants. Its qualifying test components must be achieved in one sitting. Follow the actual College offer.
A Student visa normally needs a CAS and the required academic and financial conditions. At the research date, the visa application fee is £558; the student health surcharge is £776 per chargeable visa year, with partial-year rules and normally upfront payment. Recheck immediately before a 2027 application.
The current outside-London maintenance requirement is £1,171 monthly for up to nine months, plus relevant course fees. Where evidence is required, the normal holding period is 28 days ending within 31 days before applying. Exceptions apply. This visa minimum is not the same as your actual living budget or College financial guarantee.
Main Oxford Mathematics is not on its current undergraduate ATAS list; a later transfer to Mathematical and Theoretical Physics can introduce an ATAS check, depending on nationality. Cambridge advanced-year and transfer cases need the University’s individual CAS/ATAS advice.
Cambridge guarantees College-property accommodation for individual undergraduates without children for three or four years. Oxford guarantees the first year and at least one further year, with some Colleges offering more. Check contract weeks, vacation residence, storage, catering charges and disability support. The College teaching fee is not rent.
Cambridge does not expect undergraduates to take paid term-time work. Visa work permission is separate: do not plan to fund a large overseas fee through term-time earnings.
Mature applicants and the restricted January 2027 round
Cambridge defines a mature applicant as 21 or over by 1 October of entry year. Eligible applicants can investigate Hughes Hall, St Edmund’s or Wolfson; Wolfson now admits Mathematics for 2027. The academic standard remains demanding.
The January deadlines are 13 January 2027 for UCAS and 20 January for My Cambridge Application, both 6pm UK time. It is not open to someone who applied to Cambridge in the preceding October and is not a general late route for school-leavers.
Where TMUA is required, January testing is 4–8 January (8 January in China, Hong Kong and Macau); booking closes 21 December 2026. Confirm eligibility, recent mathematical study and funding timing directly with the College. Some funding requires an October application.
Subject preparation, the application and the degree beyond it.
Do I need Further Mathematics, or can I explain that my school does not offer it?
Oxford expects Further Mathematics where available and publishes specific alternatives when only AS or no Further Mathematics is available. Cambridge normally requires Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level: contact shortlisted Colleges early about missing provision and additional preparation. A voluntary omission is a different situation.
Can I choose Statistics, Philosophy or Computer Science after applying for Mathematics?
Oxford Mathematics and Statistics shares G100 admission, with a decision after four common terms. Mathematics and Computer Science (GG14) and Mathematics and Philosophy (GV15) are separate UCAS choices. Cambridge Mathematics has statistical and other related options, but no identical named joint honours in this comparison. Do not plan around an assumed later course switch.
Is Mathematics with Physics an easier Cambridge application, or an ESAT route?
It is a first-year option within Mathematics, with the same mathematical admissions standard, central TMUA requirement and normal STEP conditions. It is not the Natural Sciences application route. Check Physics/mechanics preparation, the first-year balance and any later transfer conditions.
Must I be an Olympiad medallist or have a research publication?
Neither appears as a universal requirement in the published course requirements reviewed. Strong preparation means engaging seriously with mathematics and learning to explain unfamiliar reasoning. A paid summer programme or publication should not be treated as an admissions requirement.
Can I replace TMUA with STEP, or retake TMUA in January?
TMUA and STEP serve different stages of Cambridge’s normal process. January is not a general retake or replacement for the October sitting; only one TMUA sitting is permitted per cycle. There is a restricted January route for eligible Cambridge mature applicants. Trinity’s overseas exception is College-specific and needs confirmation.
A College can review the scripts and wider application when considering a near miss, but admission is not guaranteed. Nor can the gap between Cambridge offers and acceptances be attributed entirely to STEP. Follow the College’s instructions; do not assume an extra sitting after rejection creates a right to reconsideration.
Do both fourth years require a dissertation, and can everyone continue?
Oxford main Mathematics has a compulsory fourth-year dissertation and a current Part B progression standard of at least 59.5 weighted average. Cambridge Part III is a taught master’s year: a First in Part II gives automatic permission; other cases need College-supported permission. Its essay carries three units and is needed for 17–19 units, rather than being universally compulsory. Rules can change before a future student reaches this stage.
BA is the title awarded for the three-year Mathematics degree at these universities. It does not make the mathematical content a humanities course. Oxford’s MMath and Cambridge’s fourth-year BA/MMath are integrated undergraduate routes; Cambridge’s MASt is the separate route for external Part III entrants.
Can I take a gap year, defer for national service or transfer from another university?
Discuss the exact plan with the College. Maintain mathematical practice during a gap year and check when STEP must be taken; previous results do not necessarily prevent another condition. Singapore service-related multi-year deferral needs specific instructions. Neither university offers a routine transfer with credit into second-year Mathematics; second-degree arrangements are separate.
What careers or research opportunities can the degree support?
The mathematical training can support research, statistics, computing, modelling, finance, teaching and other analytical work. Compare advanced options, programming and project experience against your actual interests. A fourth year does not guarantee a PhD, and summer research or industry programmes have their own selection; no job or salary follows automatically.
2027-entry reference, checked 25 October 2026. Academic review is pending. Sources are linked beside each topic; College instructions and the actual offer take priority. New applications for another entry year need that cycle’s verified requirements.
