YOUR ROUTE INTO COMPUTER SCIENCE

What applies
to you?

A strong application begins with the right preparation. Mathematics matters at both universities; a coding portfolio does not replace required subjects.

Oxford CS / CS & Philosophy: A*AA. Maths & CS: A*A*A. Full Further Maths is normally expected where available. All three: IB 39, 766 HL, Maths HL 7, with AA or AI accepted without preference.

Cambridge: A*A*A or IB 41–42, 776 HL. Maths AA HL is normally required at IB; take Further Maths to AS/A level if the school offers it. Churchill publishes A*A*A* / 43 and 777; check the College’s full conditions.

Oxford AP: four 5s including Calculus BC and two other maths/science subjects, or three such 5s plus SAT 1470/Maths 770 or ACT 32. Maths & CS uses SAT 1480/Maths 770 or ACT 33 for the three-AP route. Cambridge: normally five relevant AP 5s, strong school results and SAT 1500/Maths 750 or ACT 33; science applicants using ACT also need Science 33.

National qualifications: use the exact award and course-grade band. For example, Oxford’s CBSE baseline is three A1s/two A2s for CS, or four A1s/one A2 for Maths & CS, including required subjects. Cambridge CS is not a CBSE-only accepted route. Mixed packages and unlisted awards need university/College advice.

BEGIN WITH THE EDUCATION

More than
writing code.

Why does an algorithm work? What can a machine compute? How do we build a system we can trust? Both universities connect mathematical ideas with practical work. The course structure is a better guide than the shorthand “Oxford theory, Cambridge practice”.

One university choice.

You cannot ordinarily apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same undergraduate admissions year. Choose the education before building the application around it.

Peterhouse and Trinity also require CSAT if shortlisted.

CS does not have Mathematics’ universal STEP condition. Some individual offers may include STEP, including Christ’s qualification-specific exception. Trinity CS requires October TMUA for overseas applicants too.

TMUA dates, booking, fees and the restricted January exception

Standard 2027-entry dates have passed: booking closed 28 September 2026 at 18:00 BST; testing was 12–16 October, with TMUA only on 15–16 October in China, Hong Kong and Macau. Results are due 16 November 2026. These are reference-cycle dates, not a late application window.

TMUA costs £78 in the UK/Republic of Ireland, £133 elsewhere. Book a Pearson centre separately from UCAS, check ID requirements and request access arrangements before booking. Eligible UK candidates can apply for the provider’s bursary.

January is not a general retake. Eligible Cambridge mature-College January applicants may use 4–8 January 2027 (8 January only in China/Hong Kong/Macau). Booking opens 28 October at 15:00 GMT; access requests close 7 December, bursaries 14 December and booking 21 December at 18:00 GMT. One sitting per cycle. Confirm eligibility first.

CSAT and STEP: what changes at a Cambridge College?

CSAT is additional at Peterhouse and Trinity. Prepare for written mathematical/computational reasoning, not a test of how many programming languages you know. Follow the current College invitation for the date, platform, time zone, upload process and access arrangements.

The latest clearly dated provider instructions verified in our research were for 2025, not the coming December round. We have therefore not reused those dates or the historical format as confirmed 2026 instructions.

CS does not have Mathematics’ standard STEP 2/3 condition. However, individual offers can differ: Christ’s India guidance says STEP may be included where equivalent Maths/Further Maths preparation is not demonstrated. Confirm the exact package directly. Trinity’s overseas TMUA exception for Mathematics does not apply to its CS course.

The 2025 course totals cover all domiciles: 1,739 applications, 163 offers and 128 acceptances. A matched international/Home-fee breakdown was not verified here.

The Home/UK-school subset is not every Home applicant. Subtracting it from the total would not isolate international applicants.

Published admissions source ↗

Admissions groups and fee status are different. These figures do not predict an individual outcome. We have not inferred an international Cambridge CS rate from a differently defined school subset, or borrowed Medicine’s overseas place limits.

The full applicant field, reporting periods and test-score evidence

Oxford, 2025–26 departmental round: CS 531 applications / 144 shortlisted / 58 offers; Maths & CS 564 / 206 / 90; CS & Philosophy 118 / 46 / 15. These are principally for 2026 entry with some deferred 2027 offers. Joint applicants receiving a single-subject offer remain in their original applied-course row.

Oxford, all three CS routes combined: UK domicile 664 applications / 227 shortlisted / 85 offers; EU 78 / 18 / 6; outside UK/EU 471 / 151 / 72. The displayed non-UK row adds the latter two. It is not an overseas fee-status or main-CS-only rate.

Cambridge, 2025 cycle: 1,739 applications / 163 offers / 128 acceptances. Offers/applications is 9.4%; acceptances/applications is 7.4%. The Home/UK-school subset (1,114 / 100 / 89) cannot be subtracted to isolate all international applicants.

Oxford’s course-page three-year averages and the single-round offers above measure different outcomes. Historical Cambridge College TMUA means also vary with the cohort: a mean is not a minimum, and College comparisons do not establish an easier route. No personal chance calculator is implied.

College fees: published undergraduate range £12,885–£15,950. Accommodation belongs in living costs, not the teaching fee.

Planning illustrations, not a final quote. Whole-course figures simply multiply the annual estimate; they exclude future increases, visa/health charges, flights and extra costs. Oxford fees usually rise annually. Cambridge normally fixes international University tuition for the course, but College fee policies differ. A fourth year needs academic progression. School location and nationality alone do not determine fee status.

Scholarships, sponsorship and the funding gap

Full international undergraduate scholarships are scarce. Cambridge says most support is partial and means-tested. Cambridge Trust applications normally follow a College offer; country awards can have earlier deadlines. Hong Kong’s Prince Philip Scholarship needs an application alongside the Cambridge application.

Reach Oxford has restricted country and circumstance eligibility, with around 2–3 awards a year across subjects. CS is within its subject scope. An Oxford offer is needed first; the published 2027 scholarship deadline is 26 January 2027, with detailed instructions due in January.

Ask whether an award covers College fees, fee increases, vacation living and a fourth year, and check renewal conditions. For government sponsorship, read service bonds and rules about joint degrees or changing course. Do not deduct a prospective award from the budget before it has been granted.

US federal loans and integrated master’s years

Oxford’s current guidance distinguishes new borrowing regulations from grandfathered arrangements. A new entrant should not assume the old unlimited Parent PLUS model. Its new-regulations table lists a $20,000 annual / $65,000 aggregate Parent PLUS limit per dependent student, subject to eligibility and regulatory updates.

Ask the university loans team to confirm the exact course, fourth-year classification, prior borrowing, dependent status and disbursement dates. MEng or MCompSci in the title does not itself establish a US loan category. Plan for currency movement and cash needed before funds arrive.

THE APPLICATION & THE MOVE

The details
that matter.

Qualifications, tests and an application are one part of the plan. Documents, English, funding and arrival need their own attention.

2027-entry reference · the main deadline has passed.

UCAS was due 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time. Cambridge’s additional form and required transcript were due 22 October, 18:00. For a later entry year, verify its own published dates; the January mature round is a restricted exception.

  1. BEFORE YOU APPLY

    Confirm the route.

Check the exact subjects, qualification package and College. Arrange TMUA separately, with time for access arrangements and test-centre ID checks.

  2. APPLICATION

    Make the evidence clear.

UCAS needs the academic reference and predicted grades. Cambridge adds My Cambridge Application and, for relevant routes, a transcript.

  3. DECEMBER 2026

    Think in conversation.

Most Oxford CS-family interviews are 14–17 December, with some earlier. Cambridge’s arrangements vary by College; shortlisted Peterhouse/Trinity applicants also take CSAT.

  4. JANUARY 2027

    Read every condition.

Main Oxford decisions: 12 January. Cambridge: 27 January. Academic results, English and funding conditions need careful follow-through.

Personal statement, transcripts, reference and application charges

UCAS uses three questions with 4,000 characters total including spaces, at least 350 per response. Explain what you explored and how your thinking developed. A project, reading or a difficult problem is useful when you can discuss it honestly; no publication or paid programme is required.

Include all actual and pending qualifications. Ask the referee to explain predictions and unavailable school subjects. Cambridge transcripts must follow its upload/translation instructions; do not translate one yourself. Oxford normally asks school applicants not to send unsolicited certificates/transcripts with UCAS and requests evidence when needed.

2027 UCAS fee: £34.50. Most international Cambridge applicants pay a further £60, with exemptions. UCAS plus outside-UK/Ireland TMUA is £167.50; adding Cambridge’s £60 gives £227.50 before English tests, AP/SAT charges, documents or travel.

Interviews, written work and online arrangements

Oxford interviews are online for this cycle; the College invitation controls your appointment and equipment. Cambridge formats depend on the College. Christ’s interviews online and does not set an additional CS interview-day problem sheet. Peterhouse and Trinity have CSAT arrangements to follow.

No universal submitted essay or coding portfolio is required for these CS routes. Follow any specific College request. A transcript, extra form or written assessment is not the same as submitted school written work.

Practise explaining an unfamiliar problem, testing an example, spotting an assumption and responding to a hint. For joint degrees, prepare to discuss both subjects. Check the writing setup, internet connection, time zone and any adjustments early.

English-language evidence and the revised TOEFL

Where required, the normal IELTS Academic reference is 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in every component. The actual College/university condition and accepted test list control; English-medium schooling is not an automatic waiver.

Oxford currently does not accept TOEFL taken from 21 January 2026, while the revised test is reviewed. Do not use Cambridge postgraduate TOEFL guidance to establish undergraduate acceptance; get a current undergraduate College confirmation before paying for a test.

Cambridge Colleges can need evidence at interview-selection stage as well as in a later offer. Christ’s acceptance of certain predicted English qualifications is College-specific. Plan the evidence, validity period and deferred-entry timing early.

Student visa, health surcharge, financial evidence and ATAS

At the research date, the Student visa fee is £558 and the student health surcharge £776 per chargeable visa year. The latter is normally paid upfront and depends on the full visa period. Recheck charges when applying.

The current outside-London maintenance requirement is £1,171 monthly for up to nine months (£10,539), plus relevant unpaid course fees on the CAS. Where evidence is required, the usual holding period is 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days before application. Differential evidence rules do not remove the funding requirement.

The visa minimum is not the actual study budget. Meet the university’s conditions for a CAS and check passport, funding and any TB evidence. Do not infer an ATAS requirement or exemption from the MEng title alone: course code, nationality and later changes can matter. Oxford’s current undergraduate ATAS list does not name its CS family; follow individual university/CAS advice.

Accommodation, vacations and life at College

Cambridge guarantees College accommodation for individual undergraduates without children for three or four years under its published terms. Oxford’s general provision is first year and at least one further year, with some Colleges offering more.

Ask about contract weeks, vacation residence, storage, early arrival, cooking, accessible rooms and support during closures. Couples and students with children need a separate plan. The Cambridge College teaching fee is not rent. Use 12 months in the budget if you need year-round living provision.

Gap years, Singapore National Service and mature January applicants

Use a gap year to sustain mathematical and academic readiness. For Singapore National Service, Cambridge lists Colleges considering a two-year deferral: choose the one-year UCAS option, then explicitly request the two-year service deferral in My Cambridge Application. King’s asks for contact first. Keep the College informed about service commitments affecting tests/interviews. Ask Oxford directly about a longer deferral.

Cambridge mature means 21+ by 1 October in the entry year. The eligible January round uses UCAS 13 January 2027 and My Cambridge Application 20 January, both 18:00 UK time. St Edmund’s lists CS. The round is not open to someone who applied in the preceding October and does not waive mathematical requirements.

Careers, internships and staying in the UK after graduation

Possible directions include software, systems, security, AI/data work and research. Look at the academic foundation and project opportunities; no internship, graduate role, salary or employer sponsorship is guaranteed. Neither main course should be described as including a guaranteed industrial placement year.

Current GOV.UK guidance gives an eligible Graduate visa 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. A student entering in 2027 will graduate years later, so check the rules then. The degree does not itself confer permanent residence or work permission in another country.

PREPARATION

Make your
thinking visible.

Useful preparation leaves you able to explain a decision, question a result and try a better approach.

Secure the mathematics.

Build the required subject foundations, then practise applying them to unfamiliar problems. Keep a record of why an answer failed, not just the correct answer.

Investigate something small.

Compare two algorithms, explore a graph problem or test a simple model. Understand the code, its assumptions and its limits. Be honest about any AI assistance.

Explain what changed.

Discuss your work and respond to a hint. A carefully understood project or argument is more useful than a long list of technologies or certificates.

THE QUESTIONS FAMILIES ASK

Before you
make the choice.

The subject, the application and the possibilities beyond it.

Do I need school Computer Science, a GitHub portfolio or an Olympiad medal?

School CS is not a universal prerequisite. Required mathematics comes first. No universal GitHub, medal, internship or publication requirement is identified in the cited course guidance. A small project you understand can be useful evidence; an impressive title cannot replace explaining your own work.

Which course is best for AI, software engineering or cybersecurity?

Start with foundations: algorithms, probability, linear algebra, programming, systems and logic. Both universities offer theoretical and practical study. Look at compulsory papers, later options and projects; no future option, internship, job or salary is guaranteed. Oxford CS & Philosophy adds substantial philosophical work, rather than just an AI ethics module.

Can I apply to both universities or use a joint degree as a fallback?

Ordinary undergraduate applicants cannot apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same admissions year, and Oxford allows one course choice. Apply for the course you want to study. A different-course offer or later switch is discretionary and must not be assumed.

Can I finish APs after applying, and how do UK and US decisions fit together?

Pending examinations can form part of a conditional offer, with credible predictions. TMUA and application deadlines still apply. UK offers can remain conditional until summer results; coordinate US deposits and commitments around that uncertainty. SAT or ACT does not replace TMUA.

Do the BA and MEng titles change what the degree means?

The BA is a science degree in this subject. Cambridge’s fourth-year MEng continues undergraduate study; it is not automatic or the separate graduate MPhil. Oxford awards MCompSci, MMathCompSci or MCompPhil according to route. Confirm overseas graduate-programme recognition, accreditation and loan classification with the relevant institution rather than inferring it from the title.

Do I need an expensive laptop or paid summer programme?

A basic modern laptop is sufficient in Cambridge’s departmental preparation guidance; ask about facilities and access needs before buying specialist hardware. Neither an expensive machine nor a paid course is a published admissions prerequisite. Free official test and subject resources are available.

What if I am already studying at another university?

Do not assume a transfer into year two. Oxford does not accept ordinary mid-course transfers, and applications to restart while at a UK university are normally exceptional. Cambridge has specific restrictions and exceptions. A year of overseas university study may be considered as preparation in some national routes, but does not establish a right to advanced entry.

Can I fund the degree through freelance coding or a startup?

Do not build the budget around this. Cambridge does not expect undergraduate term-time paid work. Student visa restrictions are separate and do not permit self-employment or business activity. Online freelance work, commercial apps or overseas clients are not automatic exceptions; ask the university immigration team about the exact activity.

Sources, reporting dates and how to use this guide

Research checked 26 October 2026 for the 2027-entry reference. Historical cycles retain their original labels. Requirements do not determine individual eligibility or predict admission. Academic review is pending; current university guidance, College instructions and the actual offer take priority.

The report flags unverified CSAT 2026 administration, mixed-qualification cases and the absence of a matched Cambridge international CS funnel. Where guidance is unclear, the relevant College or department should resolve the exact applicant case.
